We analysed over 960 academic literature in Scopus database published between 1992 and 2016 ascertain the state of scholarship on green growth in Africa. With the need for evidence-informed debate and policy-making on inclusive green growth in Africa, we mapped the academic literature to determine the focus of academic research, evidence base and key research gaps relating to the GIGGA agenda in Africa. The systematic mapping of literature reveals that 52% of all the academic literature published on inclusive green growth in Africa has an academic outside Africa as its leading author, while 84% of the published research on Africa’s green growth agenda comes from South Africa. Research on several important dimensions of green growth in Africa is altogether absent. Increasing research capability in African educational institutes is therefore an urgent requirement.
